Definisi dan Fungsi

"The present continuous/progressive tense is used to describe an action that is ongoing at the current time." Present continuous/progressive tense umumnya digunakan untuk:
  • Menyatakan kejadian yang sedang berlangsung waktu ketika pembicaraan sedang terjadi.
  • Menyatakan kegiatan yang sedang dalam progres / rencana.

Ciri-Ciri

Kalimat dalam Simple Present Tense dapat dikenali dengan memperhatikan hal-hal sebagai berikut:
  1. Rumus: Subject + to be (am/is/are) + Verb-ing (Continuous Form)
    • Am digunakan untuk I
    • Is digunakan untuk he, she, it
    • Are digunakan untuk you, they, we
  2. Umumnya menggunakan time adverbs untuk menjelaskan kejadian yang sedang berlangsung, contohnya: in one hour, at the moment, just now, now, right now, etc.
  3. Menggunakan Progressive verbs atau kata kerja yang mendeskripsikan kejadian yang sedang berlangsung. Sedangkan untuk sebaliknya yaitu Non-progressive verbs yang mendeskripsikan keadaan yang ada bisa dilihat contoh-contoh berikut ini:
    • Mental state (know, believe, imagine, want, realize, feel, doubt, need, understand, suppose, remember, prefer, recognize, think, forget, mean)
    • Emotional state (love, have, fear, mind, like, dislike, entry, care, appreciate)
    • Possession (posses, have, own, belong)
    • Sense of perception (taste, hear, see, smell, feel)
    • Other states (seem, cost, be, consist of, look, owe, exist, contain, appear, weight, include)

Rumus

Berikut adalah rumus Present Continuous/Progressive Tense untuk kalimat bentuk positif, negatif, dan interogatif/pertanyaan.
  • Kalimat Positif (+)
    They are working on their homework now,
    (subject + am/is/are + verb-ing + complement)
  • Kalimat Negatif (-)
    They are not working on their homework now.
    (subject + am/is/are + not + verb-ing + complement)
  • Kalimat Interogatif/Pertanyaan (?)
    Are they working on their homework now?
    (is/am/are + subject + verb-ing + complement + ?)

Contoh Penggunaan

Dimulai pada masa lalu, berlangsung sekarang, bisa berhenti pada suatu waktu di masa yang akan datang 
Toni is sleeping right now.
(Toni sedang tidur sekarang.)
You need an umbrella because it is raining.
(Kamu butuh sebuah payung karena sedang hujan.)

Menyatakan kegiatan sedang dalam progres
Siti is taking five courses this year.
(Siti sedang mengambil 5 kursus tahun ini.)
Mark is trying to improve his drawing skills.
(Mark sedang mencoba meningkatkan kemampuan menggambarnya.)
I am writing another article this year.
(Saya sedang menulis buku lain tahun ini.)

Kondisi Khusus

Dalam kondisi tertentu seperti untuk mengungkapkan rasa kesal/annoyance, penggunaan Present Continuous/Progressive Tense dapat digunakan bersama dengan kata always/forever/constantly. Contohnya sebagai berikut.
I am always/forever/constantly picking up Maria's dirty shoes!
(Aku selalu mengambil sepatu kotor Maria!)

Bandingkan kedua kalimat di bawah ini:
Maria is always leaving her dirty shoes on the floor for me! Who does she think I am? Her maid?
(Maria selalu meninggalkan sepatu kotornya di lantai untukku! Dia pikir aku siapa? Pembantunya?)
Maria always leaves her dirty shoes on the floor.
(Maria selalu meninggalkan sepatu kotornya di lantai untukku.)
Kalimat kedua menunjukkan rasa kesal/annoyance, sedangkan kalimat kedua menunjukkan kebiasaan. Umumnya kedua kalimat tersebut diucapkan dengan ekspresi yang berbeda.

Berikut adalah contoh dalam perbandingan non progressive verb untuk menyatakan keadaan yang sudah ada dengan non-progressive verb untuk menyatakan kejadian yang sedang berlangsung.
I think he is bad boy.
I am thinking about this news.

He has a new car
I am having a good time.

These foods taste bad.
Chef Juna is tasting the sauce.

The flower smells good.
Rosalia is smelling the perfume.

I see many youngsters here.
The dentist is seeing the patient.

The cat's fur feels soft.
Susan is feeling the cat's fur.

Shelby looks cold.
She is looking out the window.

Grandma appears to be asleep.
The actress is appearing on television.

The cupboard is heavy. It weight a lot.
The grocer is weighing the jackfruit.

I am hungry.
Tom the cat is being foolish.
